The Formula
Charge Time = (Capacity × (100% – Current Charge%) ÷ 80% Efficiency) ÷ Charger Amps
Here’s what that means in plain terms. First, work out how many Ah your battery actually needs to replace, based on how depleted it is. Then account for the fact that charging isn’t 100% efficient, some energy is lost as heat, so you need roughly 20% more Ah input than the battery will actually store. Divide that by your charger’s amp output, and you get the real charging time.
What Each Field Means
- Battery Capacity (Ah) – The rated capacity printed on your battery, such as 150Ah or 200Ah.
- Current Charge Level (%) – Roughly how full your battery is right now. If you don’t know exactly, a battery that struggled to start or run appliances is usually somewhere between 10-30%.
- Charger Output (Amps) – The amp rating of your charger, printed on the charger itself. A basic trickle charger is often 2A, a mid-range charger is 6-10A, and fast chargers go up to 15-20A.
The tool assumes a standard 80% charging efficiency, which is typical for lead-acid and tubular batteries in Pakistan. Faster chargers generate more heat and can lower real-world efficiency slightly, so treat the result as a solid estimate rather than an exact number.
Why Charging Slower Is Usually Safer
A lower amp charger takes longer but puts less stress on the battery, since less current means less heat buildup inside the cells. For routine charging, using a charger rated around 10% of your battery’s Ah capacity is the safest long-term habit.
